About
Korean tenor Ilhee Lee is rapidly gaining recognition for his exceptional artistry and compelling stage presence. A distinguished alumnus of the prestigious Apprentice Artist programs at both The Santa Fe Opera and Central City Opera, Lee has garnered acclaim for his performances on the mainstage, where his vocal nuance and dramatic depth have been consistently highlighted.
Lee’s recent highlights include critically acclaimed performances as Arcadio in Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas and Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the Boston University Opera Institute. His versatile repertoire spans from the title role in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and the Prince in Massenet’s Cendrillon to Britten’s complex Quint in The Turn of the Screw.
In the 2024-25 season, Lee joined Opera San José, where he performed the role of Goro and covered Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
Beyond his performance career, Lee is a dedicated scholar and doctoral researcher, bridging the gap between historical performance practice and contemporary operatic interpretation. His intellectual approach to music is complemented by a stellar academic background, holding degrees from Seoul National University, New England Conservatory, and Boston University.
Lee’s artistry has been supported by numerous accolades, including the Joan and Henry Wheeler Presidential Scholarship, the Tan Family Foundation Scholarship, and the John Moriarty Award from Central City Opera.
